"A great way to grow up"...
My Family Background*
My ancestors were the Blevins, Whitley, Hensley and Welch families with very long histories of farming and ranching in America. My seventh great grandfather, Isham Blevins, was born in Virginia when George Washington was President. Isham moved westward to Tennessee, and married into the Meek family. Both families migrated to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and by 1830 were among the earliest farmers in northwest Arkansas, purchasing land with Choctaw script. Great Grandfather Samuel Blevins served in the civil war in the famous Battle of Pea Ridge. My father Lee Roy Blevins, was born in Muleshoe, "Bialy County, Texas," one of 11 children born to Lee Roy and Amanda Whitley Blevins.
On the maternal "Hensley" side, I am the tenth generation born in America. My eleventh great grandfather, James Hensley , was born in Tiverton, England, and immigrated to the Virginia Colony around 1622, with his wife and father. He had a land patent for 300 acres on the middle precinct of the eastern shoreline of Virginia. James established a plantation in the tide water area near the Accomack settlement in Virginia.
Henry Hensely, my fifth great grandfather, served in the American Revolutionary War in the 6th Virginia Regiment, Continental Line from Henry County, Virginia, and later in the 12th Company, Burke County, North Carolina. This area later became Buncombe County, and Henry settled on Bald Mountain Creek. Henry and his brothers built the roads along the Cane River. Their Hensley descendants proliferated throughout the Bee Log along the Cane River. Some of his descendants migrated to Clay County, Kentucky.
Great - Great Grandfather Squire Hensley, farmed in Clay County and helped found the famous Oneida Baptist Institute. Squire Hensley was a Trustee and benefactor of this Christian school that enrolls students from all over the world!
My mother, Dovie D. Hensley was born in Caddo County, Oklahoma. I was born in Jefferson Township, along with sisters, Lois and Margaret. My brother, Ernie, was born in Bethany, Oklahoma.
Our families lost their farms after suffering the Great Depression and Dust Bowl eras and decided to make a change along with many other family members to find a better life.
My folks first tried for a new life in Washington state, but returned to Oklahoma to move west with many of our Blevins and Hensley kinfolks. We left Oklahoma in December of 1938 when I was 4 years old. When we got to Mesa, Arizona, we spent Christmas Eve camped out on a mountain top. All the kids got oranges to share on Christmas morning. The rest of the kinfolks in our caravan moved on to Tipton, California, and we stayed behind so that my sister, Donna, could be born. Mom had a difficult pregnancy and she and the baby needed real special care.
Today, Margaret's son, Jim Callahan, and his wife, Melanie live in Mesa, Arizona, not too far from the mountain top where we had Christmas on our way to California. They have two beautiful daughters,Sarah who... graduated with honors from Arizona State University & Amy, who... is a freshman at the University Of Arizona, Tucson.
We finally arrived in the San Joaquin Valley in the "Spring of 1939" driving a 1928 Oldsmobile pulling a two wheel trailer. The car was full with Mom, Dad, Uncle George Hensley and five children. Dad and Uncle George made coffee using water out of the radiator. We had a lot of flat tires and radiator problems going over the Grapevine on highway 99. Dad said we scattered pots and pans all the way down the hill to Bakersfield!
My brother Ron was born in Tulare, California in 1945 and now lives within a stone's throw of the old Grapevine where our parents camped out and dreamed of a better life for their kids. Ron, and his wife, Karen, now own a beautiful ranch there just above Gorman, and own Gorman Real Estate.
I often tell people that John Steinbeck must have written the "Grapes of Wrath" after listening to the stories that my parents told of the hardships they endured on the bumpy road to recovery. "We were taught to value," hard work, education, faith in God and family, no matter what--family sticks together!
" I will never forget that Dad always told me to never give up!
*Special thanks to my cousin, Peggy Blevins Weatherspoon, MSG, a Gerontologist, author and University instructor in Southern California for sharing her valuable family research with me. I also wish to acknowledge the Blevins genealogy research contributed by Pauline
Hoskison Rosebery, Cayucos, California, and Louise Bryant, Yell, Arkansas.
My Farming Background
I have been involved in agriculture since I was just big enough to reach the pedals on my "dad's" old F-12 Farmall tractor and Gram truck, baling and roadsiding hay. We also constructed and operated cotton gins in numerous locations throughout the San Joaquin Valley for many decades.
Looking back, I owe Dad for teaching me to read blueprints at an early age and teaching my brothers and me how to be creative and to make things work better with what we had on hand.
" Necessity is the mother of invention," and Dad's training helped me throughout my life when I was involved in manufacturing, the construction business and as an inventor.
I have worked with farmers in Oregon and California for most of my life and came up with the idea for the Agro-Tower Grow Pots after spending a dozen years working with strawberry and vegetable farmers. The Agro-Tower was further developed and streamlined with the assistance of Greg Powell and Robin Marks, Owners of Make-it Manufacturing Co.
Greg worked for his "father's" injection molding company, starting when he was very young in Southern California. His expertise was vital in making the mold for the Agro-Tower Grow Pots. Robin is also a very creative thinker and has patents of his own.
I am proud of my family heritage and my recent invention! I can recommend this great product to you without reservation. I hope I have not bored you with my family history, but I guess you are lucky because I didn't tell you the rest of the story!
I look forward to receiving your orders and know you will enjoy "growing up with Agro-Tower Grow Pots" a great gift for any time of the year!
