Suggestions For One Acre
Long Island, NY
My old grow pots that I no longer market.
One Acre; 208 ft. X 208 ft. - - = 43,264 Square feet.
Planter & row spacing:
1. Arrange The Grow Pots - two rows back to back, four foot apart.
2. Stagger the rows 4.5 ft apart, then a service alley 9 foot on center for every 4 rows.
3. The rows are staggered for maximum sun, plus ease of maintenance and harvesting.
4. Alleys should be wide enough to accommodate an electric golf cart, ATV for a service
vehicle, or other small carts.
5. Each row equals about 46 towers per row.
6. Forty rows, 46 towers per row equals 1840 towers per acre @ six units per tower equals,11,040 grow pots that will contain up to, 88,320 plants, and equals about 4.9 acres of conventional grown strawberries.
Note: One 53 ft. van will hold 26 pallets @ 408 pots per pallet =10,608 grow pots = 26 pallets that weigh 1,560 lbs. each = 39,143 lbs. (This sould be enough grow pots for one acre).
STABILIZER POST: (Suggestion)
Use a rebar, conduit or galvanized pipe that will fit inside of a one inch or ¾-inch schedule
40 PVC pipe.
Bury the metal pipe into the ground,(about 16 to 18 inches) while making sure that the pipe is plumb and extends thru the first three to four pots.
Cut a 4 inch PVC or drain pipe into about 16 to 20 inch links Slid it over the support post and bury part in the ground using a sand or gravel base, makeing shure to make the pipe plumb & level.
Fill the pipe with the same base material, this should make a good base to sit the tower on elevated off the ground and be able to rotate the tower 180 degrees for easy harvesting and maximun sun.
Slide a one inch or 3/4 inch PVC pipe over the metal pipe that is long enough to extend through the top of the tower about 5 or 6 inches. This will allow you to insert a PVC- T in the top of the tower for an irrigation lateral that runs from tower to tower.
You can plug a 1/4 inch distribution hose into the lateral to feed a sprinkler or a double circle of drip tubing that fits just inside of your plants on the top grow pot and irrigate all of the pots below.
Each Grow Pot will take about 3/4 Cubic foot of growing medium to fill.
Pest Control Tip: I Apply a strip of Petroleum Jelly or Vaseline At the base of my tower stand and support post, to keep the small ciders and ants from getting into my Grow Pots.
A strip of black tape, (like the kind used for insulating pipes) around the trunk of fruit trees, then apply a strip of jelly to the tape works great.
When planting Strawberries make sure that you keep the crown above the potting soil, this will allow your crowns to expand or split to make more or larger berries.
Do not over fertilize, you will burn the plants.
Gurney's Strawberry Food Fertilizer; is a high-phosphorus water-soluble 10-52-17 formula increases fruiting and yields. Treats up to 500 feet of new or 250 feet of existing row. Order Phone: (513) 354-1491

Note: The towers can also be arranged in a more condensed pattern;
Example; Divide one acre into 4 sections with 4 - 8 ft. service alleys, each section containing about 46 rows - 4.5 ft. apart, (staggered)
